Vestergaard Company A/S was founded as "Ingeniørfirmaet G. Vestergaard" by Godtfred Vestergaard in 1962.

To start with the company was located in Godtfred and his wife Ella's home at Tåstrup, where the basis for the future of the company was laid with a production of aluminium moulds for foam rubber mattresses.

Later G. Vestergaard won a tender for special lifts for the new technical university outside Copenhagen. The company supplied 12 lifts and there was a need to increase the company manpower. At that time among others Erik Henriksen and Henning Olsen were hired; both of them are still in the company.

Apart from these lifts the company manufactured a piano lifting device for the Danish academy of music, a stage platform for the theatre of Odense, lifts for an old people's home, as well as various attractions in the Tivoli Garden.

The need for more space grew, and therefore Godtfred and his wife bought the smallholding on Niels Frederiksensvej at Kornerup outside Gevninge, where the stables were converted to a workshop and one of the living rooms to an office.

In 1966 Vestergaard was approached by SAS and asked to modify some existing de-icers. As a consequence Vestergaard was given the order for new de-icers. They consisted of a vertical, telescopic tower with a platform on top, from where the operator applied fluid to the aircraft using a spray gun.

When the big "wide-body" aircraft started to arrive in Scandinavia, SAS bought new big American de-icers with sufficient capacity for these aircraft and with the ability to use large amounts of hot water for de-icing and thus save glycol.

Vestergaard itself was not at the time able to manufacture units of that size, and consequently the company lost a considerable part of its normal turnover to the American suppliers. The American units did, however, suffer from several serious deficiencies, and once more Vestergaard was asked to make a number of modifications on the units.

Based on the experience gained the company in 1981 began the construction of a new type of de-icer, the Elephant Alfa, which was equipped with a telescopic spray boom. The viability of this working principle was demonstrated through numerous results and in turn formed the basis of a new system, the Elephant Beta. The first Beta was delivered to SAS in Copenhagen, and through the cooperation with SAS many of the initial obstacles were resolved, just as SAS came up with many practical suggestions for modifications.

Although the company was still comparatively small, Godtfred decided to have a go at the international market, and Vestergaard received orders from many different companies. Concurrently, a new type of de-icer with an open basket, the Elephant Gamma, was developed.

Because of the large order intake, an expansion of the company premises became necessary, and since 1988 the units have been assembled in the halls on Skullebjerg at Gevninge.

In 1982 G. Vestergaard was converted into a limited company with Godtfred's four children Martin, Billi, Stefan, and Frida as co-shareholders.

Godtfred retired from the company in 1996, and the position as managing director was taken over by his son Stefan.

In connection with the 40th anniversary of the company in 2002 the name was changed to Vestergaard Company A/S.
